Lytro to Expand Light Field Photography to Cell Phones

Comes with a breakthrough in photography, Lytro—light field camera developer—has stated that it is planning to expand its business to cell phone market. This will bring more excitement in addition to its introduction on Lytro camera, the new generation of camera which allows focusing after shooting.

An interview between PC World and Charles Chi—Lytro executive chairman—indicated that the company is highly interested in the idea of building their light field technology into cell phone products.

“Smartphone is a very complex ecosystem with some very large players; it’s an industry that’s very different and driven based on operational excellence,” said Chi. “If we were to enter that space, it would be through a partnership and a co-development of the technology, and some kind of licensing with the appropriate partner,” he added.

Concerning in the partner to work with, it was known previously that the late Steve Jobs of Apple had shown his interest in Lytro’s light field technology. It may be a possibility that a partnership between the two companies will result in the adoption of Lytro’s light field photography in iPhone cameras.

Yeah, and a break thru for fones and a break thru for camera fones and bam, a break on the wallet. The phone will be an expensive fone to begin with, at least 400$, then the camera will be a minumum of 300$. So, ufort. not everyone will be able to appreciate this technology – as I am thinking it will cost a MINIMUM of 600$… MINIMUM… Some Nokias were 700-800$ for a 12MP camera (they came out last year) I think it was the N900? If I had the money, I WOULD pay for the Lytro-fone, or the Droid-tro, or the I-Lyt, (insert quirky name here). I cant STAND my Droid camera. Yeah, its the Droid X, with 1080P video and an 8mp camera, but, it never focuses, needs to have a lot of light. This is the 3rd Droid X I have gotten.. They said that it ‘tests’ fine according to their repair / replacement dept.
