On Sunday (1/8), photography enthusiasts in Magelang gathered for the official launching of the community Fotografi Magelang (Magelang Photography). Took place at Coffee Toffee Magelang, the official launching was attended by the community’s initiators and more than 30 initial members.
“Fotografi Magelang comes a a result of a discussion by 6 initiators,” Brendy Pradana—the coordinator of the community—explained to Exposure magazine. “The community is founded to answer the city’s need for a lasting, well-organized photography community,” he added while also mentioning that Magelang has actually had several photography communities, which mostly don’t really last actively.
Started at about 9 in the bright Sunday morning, the launching was symbolized by cutting a tumpeng (mountain-shaped rice) followed by a photomodel hunting session. Also attending the launching were several photography enthusiasts coming from Yogyakarta, Temanggung, and the surrounding cities. The community itself aims to facilitate any Magelang-related photographers—either those born in Magelang or currently residing in the city.
Brendy explained further, “Our community aims to support the growth of photography in Magelang through educating new talents.” He also added that though a large number of the members are professional photographers—mostly pre-wedding and wedding photographers—Fotografi Magelang also targeted to invite members from various backgrounds, including students.
During the launching, the community also held a photo exhibition entitled “Women”, which displayed about 20 works from the members, including Yogyakarta-based photographer Gde Wira Brahmana—one of the 2011 Sony World Photography Award, who is also one of the initiators of Fotografi Magelang.
