Entries for the 2012 WPP Contest: Deadline Approaches

The deadline for submitting photos to the 2012 World Press Photo (WPP) Contest is approaching. All the press photographers and photojournalists are invited to participate in this 55th WPP Contest, which has already been open for entries since last December.

The deadline for submissions is January 12, 2012 at 23.59 CET (Central European Time). However, before submitting portfolios, participants have to register first for a login which is possible until January 6 at 23.59 CET.

Photos can only be submitted online via the WPP website. The entry rules, a description of the categories and instructions on how to enter are available on the contest website in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French. Visit http://submit.worldpressphoto.org for more information.

Single pictures as well as photo stories/portfolios are accepted in the following nine categories: Spot News, General News, People in the News, Sports, Contemporary Issues, Daily Life, Arts and Entertainment, Portraits and Nature.

The jury is chaired by David Friend. The results will be announced on February 10 in a press conference at the Amsterdam City Hall.

This year, however, photographers are also allowed to submit projects in the multimedia category, which was first introduced in 2011. “The first [multimedia] contest was set up as a pilot project, where entries were nominated by an international committee of experts, but the second edition in 2012 will be open for contestants to enter their work themselves,” says the WPP organisers as quoted by bjp-online.com.

These projects must include professional still photography in combination with, but not limited to, audio and visual elements as video, animation, graphics, illustrations, sound and text. Entries for the multimedia categories will be accepted until January 19. “The judges will convene in Amsterdam at the beginning of March and the winners will be announced online on 15 March 2012,” says the organisation.

In 2011, a record number of 108,059 images was entered by 5,691 photographers, representing 125 different nationalities.
