Sony Unleashed the DEV Binoculars with Still Images & Video Recording Ability

This week, Sony announced its new gadget, the DEV—a pair of new binoculars capable of capturing still images and record full HD videos in AVCHD format. The photographic ability is provided by an Exmor R CMOS sensor packed in the binoculars-camera. Pleasingly, the 3D videos recorded using the gadget is compatible with most currently available 3D HDTVs.

Designed as ideal equipment for nature or bird-watching, the binoculars ensure easier observation while also providing quick access to capture the “can’t miss” moments. Comes in two models, DEV-3 and DEV-5, these binoculars can capture still images and record 3D videos of the observed objects with stereo sound—all can be done just by a touch on the control button.

Both the DEV-3 and DEV-5 feature autofocus, more advanced than most traditional binoculars don’t have. The difference between the two models is that the DEV-3 features only a 10x optical zoom, while the DEV-5’s zoom range can still be extended to 20x.

To view images and videos recorded, users will only need to connect the binoculars via HDMI® to a Sony BRAVIA® HDTV or any HD television with HDMI input. Or, they can also connect the binoculars via USB connection for transferring images and video clips to a PC for storing, further editing, or sharing.

Andy Bubala, director of the camcorder business at Sony Electronics, claimed,  “Now consumers can watch birds, wildlife, sports action and more in steady, sharply-focused close-up views, while capturing their subjects in crisp Full HD. These new models add entirely new levels of flexibility and convenience to viewing, recording and enjoying your favorite images and scenes.”

Sony has scheduled to release the new binoculars to market this November. The suggested retail price for the DEV-3 is about $1400, while the DEV-5 is supposed to be priced at around $2000. The gadget can be purchased from Sony’s store and other authorized retail stores nationwide. photographybay.com
