Toshiba’s New HDD with Data Encryption Technology for Maximum Security
This week, Toshiba Corp has just unveiled a compact 2.5 inch HDD built in with Toshiba’s own data encryption technology called “Wipe Technology”, which will automatically invalidate data stored in the drive when it is connected to an unexpected device. The encryption technology prevents data from leaking, piracy or any other forms of illegal copying and using when, for example, the drive is stolen or borrowed.
The Wipe Technology enables the host machine or device to give an authentication code to the HDD containing data encrypted with 256-bit AES encryption. If the authentication fails, the HDD will delete its encryption key—which is conducted by a chip stored in the HDD—and automatically invalidate data stored in it. Though, it is possible to read out the data if the HDD is connected to the right device after being connected to an unexpected one.
With five storage capacities—640, 500, 320, 250, and 160GB, Toshiba mainly addresses this HDD for companies and public offices, but its 12ms seek time and 7200rpm rotation speed makes it suitable to keep photos—especially for photography-related companies and business—as it ensures maximum security and may as well prevent illegal copying and publishing.
Sample shipment will start in late April, while mass-volume production is scheduled to start in late June.
