Indonesian Photographer’s Shots & Constraints in the World Cup

Today (6/17, local time) the 2010 World Cup in South Africa has entered its seventh day since it was opened on June 11. An Indonesian photographer, Peksi Cahyo from Bola (the leading sport tabloid based in Jakarta), who is now on assignment to shoot the event told us that everything has been running according to plan.

In the previous news, Peksi Cahyo told us about his gears and what to shoot. Now we are going to see what he has shot and what constraints he has faced.

What have you shot?

We can shoot interesting photos both on-field and off-field. So far I have shot some matches, training sessions, press conferences and media opportunity at the teams’ quarters. The only one I haven’t done yet is shooting the daily life of South African community during the 2010 World Cup. I have planned to do that. But since crime level in Johannesburg is pretty high, I will need local people to accompany me in the shooting process.

Is there any constraints in doing your tasks?

Firstly, it is the weather. For the last two day, the temperature, especially in Johannesburg, have been around 0-12 degree Celcius. Secondly, it deals with the distance (between cities). After shooting the match between Argentina and South Korea this afternoon (local time), for instance, tomorrow morning I’ll have to fly to Cape Town to shoot England vs Algeria. Previously, we had to drive from Johannesburg to Durban and back to Johannesburg for totally 14 hours; and on the next day when we arrived back in Johannesburg, we had no time to take a shower because we had to be in a queue to get Match Tickets at Soccer City Stadium.

For technical constraints, one of my cameras, in fact, is not 100% well yet though the service center in Jakarta had told me — before I left for South Africa — that it was okey. Canon of South Africa provides a service counter at the Media Center. I have consulted the problem with a technician there, but so far I haven’t had time to come earlier to the stadium to get my camera repaired.
